The magnificent Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel
& The Gateway To India in Bombay from the harbour
Elephanta Island is about 9 km from Bombay harbour and is readily
served by any number of
small motor boats. On the island are magnificent basalt rock-cut cave
temples, declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The origin of the cave
temples is obscure, but they
probably date from c550-750 CE. The temples are all dedicated to the
Hindu deity Shiva.
