To Tibet And Back

Early morning arrival in Guangzhou (Guangdong) on overnight ferry from Hong Kong for onward flight to Chengdu
We had a day spare to explore Chengdu (Sichuan) before our onward flight to Lhasa (Tibet)
Road scene in central Chengdu (right) - there were no private cars in China in 1987

Hand-throwing rice noodles / Cycle rickshaws

Huge statue of Chairman Mao / The Jinjiang Hotel - note lack of traffic

Inner courtyard at the hotel / Chengdu in the rain

Scene from hotel room - in the riverside building in the foreground couples were ballroom dancing to a live ensemble

Arriving back in Chengdu from Lhasa it proved impossible to get a flight back to Guangzhou, so we embarked
on the 1 570 mile 3 day steam train journey through Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan & Guangdong Provinces
